Stefanie Carnes, PhD, became president of IITAP in November, 2010. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist and an AAMFT approved supervisor and speaks regularly at national conferences. Her area of expertise is working with patients and families struggling with multiple addictions, such as sexual addiction, eating disorders and chemical dependency.
Dr. Carnes is also a certified sex addiction therapist and supervisor, specializing in therapy for couples and families struggling with sexual addiction. In the past, Dr. Carnes has served as the director of several residential addiction treatment programs, and has also served as a faculty member at numerous universities, including the University of San Diego.
She is the author of numerous research articles and publications, including her books, Mending a Shattered Heart: A Guide for Partners of Sex Addicts and Facing Addiction: Starting Recovery from Alcohol and Drugs.

Kenneth M. Adams, PhD, is a licensed psychologist and clinical director of Kenneth M. Adams and Associates in suburban Detroit, Michigan. In addition to maintaining an active clinical practice, Dr. Adams is a national lecturer, workshop leader and consultant in the areas of child abuse, dysfunctional family systems and sex addiction. He is a certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT), a CSAT supervisor and a training facilitator as well as an Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) practitioner. A member of the American Psychological Association, Michigan Psychological Association, Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health (SASH) and International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP), Dr. Adams is also an advisory board member to SASH and IITAP and an editorial board member of Sexual Addiction & Compulsivity: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention.
Dr. Adams, along with coauthor Don Robinson, received the 2001 Reader's Choice Award for Shame Reduction, Affect Regulation and Sexual Boundary Development: Essential Building Blocks in Sex Addiction Treatment, an article, voted by subscribers of Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention, as the Article of the Year. He also received the 2011 Carnes Award for outstanding work and research in the field of sex addiction.
In 2010, Dr. Adams was part of a focus group set up to advise the Office of the Director of National Intelligence on developing criteria for security clearances for federal employees. He specifically advised on matters related to sex addiction and personality disorders. Dr. Adams is the coeditor, with Dr. Patrick Carnes, of Clinical Management of Sex Addiction and is the author of Silently Seduced and When He's Married to Mom. Thomas is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist (CSAT) and CSAT Supervisor (CSAT-S). His career spans work as a clinical therapist at The Meadows and Med III HIV Clinic, as clinical director of Pine's Grove's Men's Next Step and then Dr. Patrick's Carnes Gentle Path program at Pine Grove. He formed Thomas and Thomas Consulting Group, LLC, with Sheila Thomas, LMFT, in 2007, an outpatient practice that provides individual, couples, and group counseling as well as intensive workshops. Thomas is also a clinical consultant at Focus Healthcare of Tennessee and Focus Healthcare of Sacramento.
Debra L. Kaplan, MA, LAC, LISAC, EMDR-II, CMAT, CSAT-S, is a licensed experiential therapist in Tucson, Arizona. Ms. Kaplan works extensively with complex traumatic stress, attachment and intimacy, and sexual compulsivities. She integrates the CSAT task-centered approach with individuals, couples and groups who are addressing sexual compulsivity and relationship addiction.
