Patrick J. Carnes, PhD, is the founder of the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP) and Gentle Path Press. His extensive background in the field of addiction therapy led Dr. Carnes to develop multiple cutting-edge recovery programs aimed at treating addictive disorders. He serves as executive director of the Gentle Path Program, a residential treatment program for sexual addiction in Hattiesburg, Miss.


With more than 30 years in the sexual addiction treatment field, Dr. Carnes continues to spread his extensive knowledge as a speaker, presenter and interview subject. Stefanie Carnes

Stefanie Carnes, PhD, became president of IITAP in November, 2010. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist and an AAMFT approved supervisor and speaks regularly at national conferences. Her area of expertise is working with patients and families struggling with multiple addictions, such as sexual addiction, eating disorders and chemical dependency.


Dr. Carnes is also a certified sex addiction therapist and supervisor, specializing in therapy for couples and families struggling with sexual addiction. In the past, Dr. Carnes has served as the director of several residential addiction treatment programs, and has also served as a faculty member at numerous universities, including the University of San Diego.

She is the author of numerous research articles and publications, including her books, Mending a Shattered Heart: A Guide for Partners of Sex Addicts and Facing Addiction: Starting Recovery from Alcohol and Drugs.

Kenneth Adams

Kenneth M. Adams, PhD, is a licensed psychologist and clinical director of Kenneth M. Adams and Associates in suburban Detroit, Michigan. In addition to maintaining an active clinical practice, Dr. Adams is a national lecturer, workshop leader and consultant in the areas of child abuse, dysfunctional family systems and sex addiction. He is a certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT), a CSAT supervisor and a training facilitator as well as an Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) practitioner. A member of the American Psychological Association, Michigan Psychological Association, Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health (SASH) and International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP), Dr. Adams is also an advisory board member to SASH and IITAP and an editorial board member of Sexual Addiction & Compulsivity: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention.

Dr. Adams, along with coauthor Don Robinson, received the 2001 Reader's Choice Award for Shame Reduction, Affect Regulation and Sexual Boundary Development: Essential Building Blocks in Sex Addiction Treatment, an article, voted by subscribers of Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention, as the Article of the Year. He also received the 2011 Carnes Award for outstanding work and research in the field of sex addiction.

In 2010, Dr. Adams was part of a focus group set up to advise the Office of the Director of National Intelligence on developing criteria for security clearances for federal employees. He specifically advised on matters related to sex addiction and personality disorders. Dr. Adams is the coeditor, with Dr. Patrick Carnes, of Clinical Management of Sex Addiction and is the author of Silently Seduced and When He's Married to Mom. Thomas Tullos

Thomas is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist (CSAT) and CSAT Supervisor (CSAT-S). His career spans work as a clinical therapist at The Meadows and Med III HIV Clinic, as clinical director of Pine's Grove's Men's Next Step and then Dr. Patrick's Carnes Gentle Path program at Pine Grove. He formed Thomas and Thomas Consulting Group, LLC, with Sheila Thomas, LMFT, in 2007, an outpatient practice that provides individual, couples, and group counseling as well as intensive workshops. Thomas is also a clinical consultant at Focus Healthcare of Tennessee and Focus Healthcare of Sacramento.


Debra Kaplan

Debra L. Kaplan, MA, LAC, LISAC, EMDR-II, CMAT, CSAT-S, is a licensed experiential therapist in Tucson, Arizona. Ms. Kaplan works extensively with complex traumatic stress, attachment and intimacy, and sexual compulsivities. She integrates the CSAT task-centered approach with individuals, couples and groups who are addressing sexual compulsivity and relationship addiction. As a faculty member for IITAP, Debra trains clinicians in the CSAT tasks and assessments. Robert Weiss

RobWeiss 0608-1 Robert Weiss LCSW, CSAT-S is Senior Vice President of Clinical Development Elements Behavioral Health, and has developed clinical programs for The Ranch in Nunnelly, TN, Promises Treatment Centers in Malibu and The Sexual Recovery Institute in California (founded by Mr. Weiss in 1995). A licensed, UCLA MSW graduate and personal trainee of Dr. Patrick Carnes, Mr. Weiss is author of Cruise Control Understanding Sex Addiction in Gay Men and co-author of both Untangling the Web and the upcoming 2013 release, Closer Together, Further Apart: The Effect of Technology and the Internet on Sex, Intimacy and Relationships with Dr. Jennifer Schneider, along with numerous peer reviewed articles and chapters. James "Jes" Montgomery

Montgomery James C

James C. “Jes” Montgomery, MD began working in the field of Chemical Dependency in 1985 as a Family Physician, gaining certification by the American Society on Addiction Medicine in 1987. In 1992, he returned to LSU Medical Center in New Orleans to complete a psychiatry residency, entering practice as a psychiatrist in 1995 and attaining board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1999. He also became a Diplomate of the newly formed American Board of Addiction Medicine in 2009. Working full time in the fi eld of addiction since 1987, he received his first training in Treating the Sex Addict in 1988 at Golden Valley and has worked in the area of polyaddictions throughout his career, including sex addiction, eating disorders and gambling addiction.

Since 2003, he has worked at Sante Center for Healing in Argyle, TX, becoming their Medical Director in 2004. Dr. Montgomery has presented in the areas of pharmacology in addictions, boundaries and ethics, sexuality, sexual trauma and sexual addiction, sexuality and spirituality, grief and LGBT issues.



Shawn Jeffries

Shawn Jeffries, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist with an extensive background inbehavioral medicine, addictions, and Motivational Interviewing (MI). He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of North Texas’ Department of Clinical Health Psychology. He hasbeen a co-investigator on multiple federally funded trials involving the use of MI in improving health behaviors such as smoking cessation, dietary change, physical activity, and chronic illness management (e.g., diabetes, obesity). Dr. Jeffries regularly teaches a course on MI, and has conducted multiple MI trainings for a wide variety of health care professionals, including physicians,psychologists, counselors, social workers, therapists, pharmacists, dieticians, nurses, physician assistants and public health professionals.
 
In addition to his academic work, he has pursued multiple clinical trainings, including the Substance Abuse Professionals distinction and a Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist certification. He has a private practice with offices in Fort Worth and Bedford, TX.
